“Bertie” – the prescription delivery service

“Bertie” is the Berlingo van, driven by a team of volunteer drivers, taking prescription medication to elderly patients, or patients unable to get out and about.

The “Bertie” Delivery Service was established in 2007 and is funded by The Friends of Wyndham House Surgery Charity (FOWHS).

The aim of the service is to deliver medication to elderly patients who are unable to, or find it difficult to collect their medication from the surgery’s dispensing services.

‘Bertie’ also delivers to patients who are in need of the service on a temporary basis who may be recovering from an accident or serious illness and require the service until their recovery is complete.

You may have seen the silver van out and about throughout the lanes and villages in the surgery’s practice area. ‘Bertie’ delivers four times a week to any number of the 320 patients registered for Bertie’s services.  The team of wonderful volunteers generously give their time to this valuable service for the benefit of the community.  They drive the van over 7,000 miles a year, cheerfully deliver an average of 1,200 medication items per month under guidance from the dispensary staff, bring back messages from patients to dispensary and most importantly of all keep a friendly eye on the wellbeing of the people they have visited.  Without them, the service would be difficult to run.

The service costs FOWHS in the region of £9,000 per year to run and poor old ‘Bertie’ is now getting on a bit so just like us needs a bit more care and attention to keep going – such as four new tyres, exhaust silencer and a new starter motor this year.

Donations (small or large) are always gratefully received to assist with the running costs of the service. These can be made in person at the surgery or by post. Cheques should be made payable to “The Friends of Wyndham House” and if you are a tax payer don’t forget to get a ‘gift-aid’ form from the surgery as this adds 20% to your kind donation. Collect a ‘gift-aid’ form from Reception or access it here: Gift Aid Form 2016.
